Umai Teppanyaki on Sun Princess: Review & Menu

Umai Teppnayaki - Sun Princess Review

We recently sailed the Sun Princess through the Mediterranean, and thanks to the Premier Package, we tried six of the seven specialty restaurants onboard. On our final night, we saved one of the most entertaining options for last: Umai Teppanyaki.

This venue also offers hot pot, which we tried earlier in the cruise and loved — but the teppanyaki experience was the real standout. If you’re planning a Sun Princess sailing, don’t miss my full dining breakdown here → Princess Dining Guide.

What Is Teppanyaki on the Sun Princess?

Umai Teppanyaki on the Sun Princess

Our chef Victor at Umai Teppanyaki on Sun Princess

Teppanyaki on the Sun Princess is more than a meal — it’s a full dinner show. At Umai, Princess Cruises’ dedicated teppanyaki venue, chefs perform right at your table with:

  • Knife tricks

  • Flaming onion towers

  • Tossed eggs

  • Perfectly grilled meats and seafood

It’s part performance, part feast, and one of the most interactive dining experiences onboard.

But the real star of our night? Victor, our chef from the Philippines — or as he introduced himself, “the best Japanese chef from the Philippines.” He was hilarious, talented, and kept our entire table laughing from start to finish. I’ve done teppanyaki many times over the years, but this was one of the most entertaining versions I’ve ever experienced.

I already booked it again for our next Sun Princess sailing in August.

Umai Teppanyaki Menu Highlights

Even though my menu photo turned out blurry (blogger fail!), here are the main items featured during our dinner:

  • Filet mignon

  • Scallops

  • Chicken

  • Shrimp

  • Fried rice

  • Miso soup

  • Edamame

  • Vegetable medley

  • Dessert trio (including mochi)

The menu is simple but well‑executed — and the portions are generous.

🍤 What We Ordered

Here’s everything we tried during our meal:

  • Filet mignon

  • Shrimp

  • Fried rice

  • Miso soup

  • Edamame

  • Mochi

Appetizers

You can choose from:

  • Kabuki Salad

  • Prawn Cracker Shrimp

  • Tonkatsu (panko‑crusted pork)

I chose the Tonkatsu — crispy, savory, and delicious (even though I forgot to snap a photo).

Vegetable Medley

A simple but tasty mix of grilled veggies, cooked right on the teppan.

Fried Rice

A classic teppanyaki staple — buttery, garlicky, and perfectly seasoned.

Shrimp

Cooked with a great sear and just the right amount of char.

Filet Mignon

Tender, juicy, and cooked exactly how I ordered it. One of the best steaks I had on the entire cruise.

Dessert: Mochi

Not my favorite dessert in general, but it was fine — and honestly, I was too full to eat much more anyway.

  • Filet mignon

  • Shrimp

  • Fried rice

  • Miso soup & Edamame

  • Mochi

Best Specialty Restaurants on Sun Princess

Is Teppanyaki Worth It on a Princess Cruise?

Yes — absolutely.

I almost canceled our reservation because we were tired and figured we’d “seen it all before.” But I’m so glad we didn’t. This ended up being one of my favorite meals of the entire cruise.

Here’s why:

  • The energy was electric from the moment we sat down

  • Mark, the manager, set the tone with his upbeat personality

  • Our assistant waiters kept drinks filled all night

  • The food was excellent

  • The show was genuinely fun

  • The entire table bonded and laughed together

It was one of those nights where you could feel the joy around the table — everyone was having a blast. I seriously had the best time with all my new friends.

If you enjoy interactive dining, great food, and a lively atmosphere, Umai Teppanyaki is a must‑book specialty restaurant on the Sun Princess.
