Starting Credit Journey with Discover IT Student Card

Why we chose the Discover IT Student Card

My son Finn is currently a junior in college. I have had him and his brother as authorized users on my credit cards for a few years, but it is time we start building his own credit. Finn is 19 years old. If you are here, you know I love points and miles! I want to set Finn and Tanner (my boys) up with good credit skills to help them in life. They also both hope to earn their own points and miles. I have been doing this for 20 years. This is all they know! Finn wanted a point card to start his journey. However, after reviewing a few options, we ultimately decided to start with the Discover IT Student Card.

How do you qualify

To qualify for a Discover student credit card, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Residency: Must have a U.S. address and a Social Security number.

  • Enrollment: Must provide proof of at least half-time enrollment in school.

  • Income: If under 21, you must verify independent income.

  • Application Information: Provide all the required information requested in your Discover application.

The application process was super quick. After we filled out the form, we had our answer in less than 60 seconds

Benefits of the Card

  • Cash Back Rewards: Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

  • No Annual Fee: The card has no annual fee, which is a significant advantage for students.

  • Credit Building: By using the card responsibly, you can help build credit history.

  • Match Offer: Discover will match all cash back earned at the end of your first year, providing an additional incentive to use the card

Our plan is for Finn to keep this card for a year before opening another one. We will make at least one purchase a month on this card. Each month, we will pay it off in full. Then we will look at getting one of these cards to continue his points journey:
