Half Moon Cay Cruise Review : What to Expect

A Perfect Beach Day in the Bahamas

Half Moon Cay is one of those cruise ports that instantly makes you exhale. Powder‑soft sand, calm turquoise water, and a totally laid‑back vibe — it’s the kind of private island day that feels like an actual vacation. After visiting on our recent Carnival cruise, I’m convinced it’s one of the best beach stops in the Caribbean. When I cruise the caribbean my goal is to have a great beach day, and Half Moon Cay does not disappoint!

Is Half Moon Cay Worth It?

Yes — especially if you love a relaxing beach day. Half Moon Cay consistently ranks as one of the top private islands thanks to:

  • Calm, shallow water perfect for kids

  • Free beach chairs

  • A huge stretch of soft white sand

  • A simple, low‑stress layout

  • Included BBQ lunch

If you’re looking for a quiet, beautiful beach day without crowds or chaos, this is it. I personally love this port.

How to Get to Half Moon Cay (Tender Process Explained)

Half Moon Cay is a tender port, which means your ship anchors offshore and you take small boats to the island.

What to expect:

  • Tender boats run continuously throughout the morning

  • Early tenders fill quickly — arrive early if you want prime beach spots

  • The ride is short and smooth

  • Strollers and beach bags are allowed

If you’re traveling with kids or want shade, aim for an early tender.

Best Things to Do at Half Moon Cay

Even though the island is known for its beach, there’s more to do than you might expect.

1. Relax on the Main Beach

This is the star of the show — soft sand, clear water, and plenty of space to spread out.

2. Rent a Cabana or Villa

If you want shade, privacy, or a home base for kids, the cabanas are a great upgrade.

3. Try an Excursion

Even if you’re not an excursion person, these are popular:

  • Horseback riding in the ocean

  • Snorkeling

  • Kayaking

  • Stingray adventure

  • Glass‑bottom boat tour

Pro tip: Save money and bring your own snorkel mask

4. Walk the Nature Trails

A peaceful way to explore the island away from the crowds.

Half Moon Cay Cabanas & Villas: Are They Worth It?

If you want guaranteed shade, a private space, or a spot for kids to nap, the cabanas are absolutely worth considering. They include:

  • Air conditioning

  • A shaded deck

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Private loungers

They do sell out early, so book as soon as your cruise planner opens. I prefer to spend my day on my hammock float out in the water.

Lunch is included and served buffet‑style at the island BBQ.

What’s included:

  • Burgers

  • Chicken

  • Hot dogs

  • Salads

The Beach

The highlight of the island is the beach! The sand is soft and cool, even under the midday sun, and the water is calm — perfect for swimming, floating, or just soaking in the views. There are plenty of loungers, and if you want shade or extra comfort, you can rent a cabana or villa with perks like snacks, drinks, and even butler service. I always take advantage of the free loungers and bring my trusty floaty. The water at Half Moon Cay is perfect for floating! This is one of my favorite beach activities.

I highly recommend you bring your own float. This is the one I bring -> Float

Food & Drinks

Lunch is typically served at the Island BBQ, included with your cruise. It’s casual fare — burgers, chicken, and sides — nothing fancy, but it’s included in your cruise fare. It beats having to take a tender back to the ship for lunch. However, you can if you aren’t into what they are serving on the island. There are also bars around the island serving tropical drinks and frozen cocktails.

Beach Vibes

Despite being a popular stop, Half Moon Cay rarely feels overcrowded. There are lots of loungers, and the beach is huge. It’s the perfect beach day. If you enjoy relaxing in the sun, this is the port for you. When I sail the Caribbean, I look for private islands/resorts by the cruise lines to save money. All I am looking for is a glorious beach day, and these ports are the answer for me.
