I had been waiting YEARS for this day. Cinque Terre has been on my bucket list forever — one of those places you see in photos and think, “Someday.”
When we booked this cruise for the solar eclipse, I didn’t even realize Cinque Terre was on the itinerary. It wasn’t until I started digging into the port list that I saw La Spezia sitting there… and my jaw dropped.
Then I realized something even better: This wasn’t going to be one of those long, exhausting port days with a two‑hour bus ride each way. Nope. Cinque Terre is easy — just a short walk to the train station, a few fun regional trains (which are part of the Italy experience), and you’re in the villages.
I couldn’t believe it. A bucket‑list day… and it was going to be simple.
And let me tell you — I was so excited. Like, “counting down the minutes” excited.

Cinque Terre is pastel villages, cliffside views, lemon trees, turquoise water — and yes, a little bit of adventure. It’s absolutely worth doing from La Spezia, but it’s a big day, and sometimes things happen.
Like what happened to us.
🚨 The Train Wreck the Night Before
The night before our tour, there was a train wreck between Pisa and La Spezia. Thankfully no one on our ship was involved, but it caused major delays across the entire region the next morning.
Because of the accident:
trains were running late
schedules were unpredictable
guides were stuck behind closures
the whole area was operating in “delay mode”
It wasn’t chaos — just a system recovering from a serious incident. Everyone was doing their best.

🚗 Our Real Day in Cinque Terre
Here’s exactly how our day unfolded — the real version, with the food, wine, and views that made it unforgettable.
🍝 Monterosso al Mare — Lunch + Wine (Our First Village)
Our first stop was Monterosso al Mare, the largest and flattest of the Cinque Terre villages — and the perfect place to start the day.
This is where we had lunch, and it was chef’s kiss.
I ordered Pasta Amatriciana (my forever favorite), and we shared a bottle of local white wine that was crisp, refreshing, and absolutely delish. Monterosso is known for its beachside restaurants and easy vibes, and it was exactly the right way to ease into the day after the train delays.
It was one of those meals where you sit back, sip your wine, and think: “Okay… this is the life.”
🍇 Vernazza — My Dream Village (Our Second Stop)

After lunch, we headed to Vernazza, and OMG… this was my dream village.
Vernazza is everything you picture when you think of Cinque Terre:

boats bobbing in the harbor
tiny alleyways
wine bars tucked into corners
that perfect golden light
I instantly fell in love.
🍷 Eroica Winery — Orange Wine + A Perfect Moment

In Vernazza, we visited Eroica, a small local winery tucked into the village — and it ended up being one of the highlights of the entire cruise.
I tried an orange wine — only my second ever — and it was incredible.
✨ What is orange wine?
Orange wine isn’t made from oranges. It’s actually white wine made like red wine — the grape skins stay in contact with the juice during fermentation, giving it:
a deeper amber color
more texture
a little tannin
and a richer, almost honeyed flavor
It’s bold, interesting, and so fun to try in a place like Cinque Terre.
We sipped our wine, chatted with the staff, and soaked in the atmosphere. It was one of those moments where everything feels slow and perfect.
🌅 Manarola — The Most Beautiful View of the Entire Trip (Our Final Village)

Our last stop was Manarola, and this is where we saw the most beautiful view of the entire trip.
Turquoise water. Colorful houses stacked on cliffs. Boats in the harbor. Sunlight hitting the village just right.
It was one of those views that makes you stop talking mid‑sentence because your brain is too busy taking it all in.
This is the moment I’ll remember forever.
