Cartagena: The Easiest DIY Cruise Port in Europe

Cartagena was exactly what we needed after the long travel day into Barcelona. You know that feeling when you’re excited to cruise but your body is still somewhere between time zones? Cartagena is the cure.
Warm air. Easy streets. No stress. No shuttle. No “figure out transportation.” Just walk off the ship, and you’re in it.
This is the port where you take a deep breath and think: “Okay… vacation mode officially activated.”
🛳️ Where Your Ship Docks
Princess docks right in town, and I mean right in town. You walk off the ship and you’re already sightseeing.
Distances from the gangway:
5 minutes → Roman Theatre
3 minutes → waterfront promenade
10 minutes → Old Town shopping streets

🧭 Our Real Day in Cartagena
We didn’t rush. We didn’t over‑plan. We didn’t try to squeeze in a million things. After the flight and the Barcelona pre‑cruise day, we wanted something simple — and Cartagena delivered.
Here’s exactly what we did:
🍷 1. Roman Wine Tasting (Booked Through Viator — And Yes, We Dressed Up Like Romans)
This was the highlight of our day and honestly one of the funniest, most memorable cruise experiences we’ve ever had.
We booked a Roman‑themed wine tasting through Viator, showed up ready for a chill afternoon… and ended up dressing like Romans while drinking wine like Romans.
The experience included:
flowing regional wines
Roman‑inspired snacks
costumes (we leaned in, obviously)
storytelling about ancient Cartagena
a group of people who were all in on the theme
It was silly in the best way, immersive without being cheesy, and such a fun break from the typical “walk and listen” style tours.
And here’s the part that made me love this tour even more: the meeting location changed, and I didn’t see the email (cruise inbox chaos), so the team literally came and picked us up by car so we wouldn’t miss it. That alone earned them a gold star.

🏛️ 2. Roman Theatre (Right After Our Wine Tasting)
After our wine tasting, we walked over to the Roman Theatre, which is shockingly close to the port. The museum leads you through artifacts and excavation history before dropping you into the amphitheater itself.
It’s dramatic, beautiful, and never as crowded as Rome or Athens.
And yes — we were still laughing about our Roman costumes while standing in an actual Roman amphitheater. The timing was perfect.
Lazy Girl Tip: Go early or go after lunch — both times are quiet and great for photos.
🌿 3. Wandering Old Town
Cartagena’s Old Town is compact, colorful, and full of:
pastel buildings
wide pedestrian streets
cafés
gelato stands
boutique shops
It’s the kind of place where you wander without a plan and still feel like you “did” the port.
🌴 4. Waterfront Walk Back to the Ship
Warm breeze, palm trees, easy path. The kind of walk that makes you feel like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Cartagena is full of casual tapas spots perfect for a quick bite:

You truly can’t go wrong.

Lazy Girl Pick: Sit in Plaza del Ayuntamiento with a café con leche and people‑watch. It’s one of the prettiest squares in Spain.
