Lazy Girl Cruise Essentials: What I Actually Pack as a Carry‑On‑Only Traveler

Lazy Girl Cruise Essentials

Cruising is supposed to be the easiest vacation on earth — and it is, as long as you don’t overpack. I’m a carry‑on‑only girl, always have been, and this guide reflects exactly how I travel: minimal, intentional, and rooted in real experience.

Everything here fits in my Away Carry‑On (Away luggage) and my overnight bag, which doubles as my embarkation‑day tote (overnight bag). No checked bags, no chaos, no “just in case” clutter.

🧳 Carry‑On Essentials

Carry on essentials

I love traveling light - you do not need a lot for a great cruise!

These items live in my embarkation‑day bag — and yes, I have a full Embarkation Day Bag post you can read.

  • Passport — always in the outer pocket for quick access.

  • Pill organizer — I travel with a 14‑day organizer instead of bulky pill bottles. If anyone ever needs verification, my pharmacy app has all my prescriptions.

  • Water bottle — hydration is non‑negotiable.

  • Bathing suit — I always pack it in my carry‑on so I can get in the pool immediately.

  • Earbuds — for podcasts, music, or tuning out terminal noise.

  • Hat + sunscreen — embarkation day is sunny, and I don’t mess around with SPF.

That’s it. Everything else waits in my suitcase until the cabin is ready.

Love to cruise? Me too! Check out my full Cruise Hub for a wealth of information. I usually cruise 8 -10 times a year!

👗 Cruise Clothing (My Real Mix‑and‑Match System)

I pack for cruises the same way I pack for everything: intentional pieces that mix and match, nothing extra.

Swimsuits (2–3… okay, 4 this year)

I used to bring two, but I found four cute Blue Rod Beattiesuits (affiliate) this year, so now I rotate them. Caribbean cruises = lots of pool + beach time, so extras help everything dry faster.

Dinner Dresses (1–2 total)

  • Short cruise: one dress

  • Long cruise: two dresses I only wear them for dinner, then change back into casual clothes.

Shorts + Tops (3 shorts + a few tops)

Three pairs of shorts is my sweet spot. They work for sea days, port days, and casual dinners.

Pajamas (one set)

Always Tommy John (not an affiliate… yet). Lightweight, soft, and easy to wash.

Cover‑ups (1–2)

They double as breakfast tops, pool cover‑ups, and beach wear.

Travel Outfit

I wear the same outfit on the plane out and back. Comfortable, neutral, and works with everything.

🛁 Beauty & Toiletries (Minimal + Always Ready)

I don’t repack toiletries for every trip — I keep a ready‑to‑go TSA kit at all times.

Refillable Shampoo + Conditioner

Cruise ship shampoo isn’t it? I use a refillable Amazon kit and keep it stocked in my TSA bag.

Minimal Makeup

Just:

  • Tinted SPF

  • Mascara

  • Lip balm or gloss

Cruise humidity does the rest.

Sunscreen Assortment

This is the one category I don’t minimize. I bring:

  • Face SPF

  • Body SPF

  • Stick SPF

  • Mineral SPF for beach days

Cruise sun is intense — sunscreen is the one thing I never want to run out of.

Everything Lives in a Clear TSA Bag

My entire beauty kit stays packed in a clear pouch so I can leave the moment a travel deal pops up.

Tech & Cabin Essentials

I don’t bring a bunch of gadgets — just the things that actually matter.

Non‑Surge Outlet Extender

Older ships never have enough outlets. This solves the only real tech problem onboard.

Wine (When Allowed)

If the cruise line allows wine and I’m not buying a drink package, I bring my own. I carry it in padded wine bags I’ve used forever — leak‑proof, durable, and never an issue. I try to bring screw top bottles so I don’t need a wine opener.

🍹 Lazy Girl Extras (Only What Earns Its Place)

I don’t pack “extras” unless they genuinely make my cruise easier — and these absolutely do.

Packing Cubes

Yes, I use packing cubes — but not because I pack a ton of stuff. I use them to keep my minimal wardrobe organized:

  • One cube for swimsuits

  • One for tops

  • One for shorts

  • One for pajamas

That’s it. → Packing Cubes I own

Hammock Float

My ride‑or‑die cruise extra. It packs flat, weighs almost nothing, and makes beach days 100× better. I use it in calm water, on private islands, and anywhere I can float without effort. It’s the perfect Lazy Girl item — maximum relaxation, minimum space.

Wine Bags

My go‑to for carrying wine onboard when allowed.

A Good Hat

Lives in my carry‑on. Sun protection first, aesthetics second.

Extra Sunscreen Options

The only category I intentionally overpack.

🎒 Carry‑On‑Only Philosophy

I don’t check bags. My Away Carry‑On and my overnight bagare the backbone of my Lazy Girl travel system.

Carry‑on only =

  • No lost luggage

  • No waiting at baggage claim

  • No overpacking

  • No stress

It’s the reason cruising feels effortless.
