Sailing on Holland America’s Zuiderdam for the first time felt like returning to a familiar favorite. This mother‑son trip was all about slowing down, enjoying the ship, and soaking in the relaxed elegance that HAL does so well. From the warm, attentive crew to the peaceful spaces we gravitated toward each day, this cruise reminded us why Holland America continues to be one of our go‑to lines. If you’re curious what a week onboard the Zuiderdam looks like — from spa days to buffet breakfasts to smoke‑free casino nights — here’s our full experience.
Feeling at Home on the Zuiderdam
Stepping onto the Zuiderdam for the first time felt surprisingly familiar. I’ve sailed the Eurodam before, and the layout, atmosphere, and overall vibe made it easy to settle in right away. But what truly sets Holland America Line apart — and what keeps me coming back — is the staff. Their attention to detail is unmatched. So many remembered my name day after day, anticipated my preferences, and even knew that Tanner loves the ribs and would slip him an extra portion whenever they saw him. That kind of warmth is rare, and it’s the reason HAL continues to feel like home at sea.

🌊 Why I Cruise
I cruise to relax, enjoy the ports, and soak in the views from the ship. I’m not a big show‑goer; instead, I spend a lot of time in the spa, and the one on the Zuiderdam was immaculate. I found myself there almost every day. On port days, I practically had the entire spa to myself — even though I still got off the ship at each stop. It was the perfect balance of adventure and serenity.

🍽️ Dining: Lido Buffet for the Win
We ate most of our meals in the Lido Buffet, and honestly, it worked perfectly for this mother‑son trip. Tanner prefers quicker meals, and since it was just the two of us, I was happy to join him there each night. The variety was great, and the staff was excellent — friendly, attentive, and always ready to help.
We did try breakfast in the main dining room once, but Tanner quickly decided the unlimited pancakes at the buffet were superior. As for me, I’m not a big breakfast eater, so I happily enjoyed a chocolate croissant most mornings.
I also brought my trusty Minipresso since I didn’t purchase a drink package this time. It was the perfect little travel companion, especially for early mornings on the balcony or quick caffeine fixes before heading ashore. If you’re curious about how it works or whether it’s worth packing for your own cruise, you can read my Minipresso Review.
🎰 Casino Time — Smoke‑Free Bliss
As a casino cruiser, I loved that the Zuiderdam’s casino was smoke‑free. It made such a difference. They didn’t have my usual video blackjack, but they did have video poker, where I played five out of the seven days. It was relaxing, fun, and a great way to unwind in the evenings. The staff was incredibly nice and drink service fast.
🛏️ Our Interior Cabin
We chose an interior cabin for this sailing, and it ended up being a great decision. It saved us a lot of money, and the room was larger than expected. With the beds separated and a comfortable couch, it never felt cramped. For a trip focused on relaxation, ports, and spa time, it was exactly what we needed. ❤️ Final Thoughts
Overall, we loved our sailing on the Zuiderdam. It was an excellent use of our mother‑son vacation time — relaxing, memorable, and filled with small moments of joy that only a cruise can deliver. Holland America continues to impress me, and this trip reaffirmed why I keep coming back.
