My Experience: Canceled Flight & Claim Process
While sailing on our MSC cruise, my husband started sending weather alerts—Nashville was bracing for a major snowstorm, and our Friday flight home looked increasingly unlikely. We had the option to rebook for Saturday, when the forecast was much clearer, but I kept monitoring our original Southwest flight just in case. Once it was officially canceled, I immediately requested a delay confirmation letter from the airline. That document was essential for filing a claim through my Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel delay benefit.
We had to stay an extra day in Miami. Miami is a great place to be stranded; there is much to do. However, it is also expensive. I was relieved that even though I paid for my airline tickets with points, I had used my Chase Sapphire Reserve card for the $11.20 each for my and my son’s flights. Flight cancellation due to weather is a covered event.

Once we disembarked from the ship, I immediately started saving receipts—every expense counted. We needed a hotel for the night, so I booked us at the Hyatt Regency Miami. Even though I had points available, I paid with my Chase Sapphire Reserve to qualify for travel delay reimbursement (up to $500 per person). Meals weren’t included, so we had to eat out multiple times—an unexpected cost. We also needed an Uber from the hotel to the airport. Altogether, our extra day in Miami racked up over $700 in expenses, all eligible for coverage.
When we got home, I had all my stuff lined up to submit my claim. Here is what Chase requested from me:
- Chase Credit Card statement showing the flight was paid for with my Reserve Card.
- Itemized sales receipts of all our expenses
- Travel itinerary showing our original trip
- Proof Of Delay from Common Carrier

I uploaded all my items and filed my claim. This was my 2nd claim. Both times, I have been asked for the items I have already sent twice. However, I just resubmitted all the same info, and my claim was paid in full on February 25, 2025.
Final Thoughts
Travel hiccups are inevitable—but with the right credit card, they don’t have to derail your plans or your budget. Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel delay benefit turned our canceled flight into a reimbursed overnight stay, complete with meals and transportation. The key? Pay with your card, save every receipt, and request documentation from the airline. Whether you're cruising, flying, or road-tripping, knowing how to use your card’s built-in protections can save you hundreds—and a whole lot of stress.
