Travel can be unpredictable. I was on a cruise in January, and our flight home got canceled. Once I knew we weren’t getting home due to a canceled flight. I quickly booked hotel rooms at the Hyatt Regency Miami. Even though I had credit card points to get a free room. I didn’t have to use those for this stay. Since our flight was canceled, this was a covered event for my Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card insurance protections. You can read more about my claim here - canceled flight.

I have stayed here several times in the past year pre-cruise and love the location. It is a beautiful walk to Bayside and the Frost Science Museum. My son Tanner loves science museums, and I had the Frost on my list of places I wanted to take him. We knew exactly how we wanted to spend our bonus day in Miami.

Early Check-In + Breakfast Highlights

After getting off the cruise, we headed to the hotel to drop off our bags. I couldn’t believe it when I checked in, and my room was ready at 10:00. Thank you, Hyatt! We dropped our bags in the room and started our day with an amazing breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. I am not a big breakfast eater, but they had French toast with lemon mascarpone, strawberries, and extra-crispy bacon.

Exploring Frost Science Museum

After breakfast, Tanner and I headed out to the Frost Science Center. It was around a mile walk from the hotel. We took a detour through the Bayside area. I knew we would want to eat lunch there later in the day and wanted to get a plan.

As we were about to head into the Museum, we saw the Dogs and Cats Walkway and Sculpture Garden. It is a free exhibition of 52 oversized sculptures. We love animals, so we both felt we had to walk through and see this exhibit before entering the museum.

We then headed to the Frost Science Center. It was almost $70 for us both to enter, but we love science and felt it was worth the expense. The center has an amazing aquarium that you can see from different levels of the museum, and it has several exhibits that Tanner enjoyed.

Lunch at Bayside + Black Market Review

We spent several hours at the museum and really enjoyed it. After we finished, we headed over to Bayside to eat lunch. We ended up eating at Black Market. I wasn’t sure how good the food was going to be being such a busy tourist area. However, we loved it. I had the skirt steak and a margarita. My margarita was excellent. Tanner had the full rack of baby back ribs and he really enjoyed them.

Final Thoughts + Travel Insurance Tip

Hyatt Regency Miami turned out to be the perfect bonus-day stay after our unexpected flight cancellation. The location was ideal — walkable to Bayside, the Frost Science Museum, and plenty of dining options. The early check-in, spacious room, and breakfast made the experience feel seamless despite the travel hiccup. Best of all, our Chase Sapphire travel insurance covered the cost, making it a stress-free solution. Whether you're cruising from Miami or need a reliable downtown hotel, Hyatt Regency is a solid choice we’d book again.
