Our Hotel La Fontaine Caen Centre Review
If you’re planning a trip to Normandy and looking for a comfortable, affordable, and incredibly welcoming place to stay, Hôtel La Fontaine Caen Centre deserves a spot at the top of your list. We spent two nights here during our Paris + Normandy itinerary, and it ended up being one of the most pleasant surprises of our entire trip.
Hôtel La Fontaine Caen Centre
🏨 First Impressions
I’ll be honest — we usually stay in larger chain hotels, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when we walked up to this small, independently owned property. But the moment we stepped inside, any hesitation disappeared. The hotel is run by two brothers who were warm, friendly, and wonderfully accommodating. Their English was excellent (which was helpful since my French is… let’s just say “high‑school level from 30 years ago”), and they made us feel welcome right away.

🛏️ Rooms: Simple, Clean, and Comfortable
We booked two rooms — one standard and one deluxe — and both were spotless and thoughtfully arranged. The deluxe room had extra space and a couch, so we gave that one to our boys so they could spread out. The standard room was cozy but perfectly functional for two adults.
A few notes:
The rooms do not have air conditioning.
We visited in mild weather, and the cool evening breeze with the window open was perfectly comfortable.
If you’re sensitive to heat, pack a small travel fan (I usually do, but forgot this time).
Overall, the rooms were quiet, clean, and ideal for a short stay.
🍽️ Breakfast: Don’t Skip It
We added breakfast to our stay, and it was absolutely worth it. The spread included:
Fresh croissants
Homemade bread - don’t miss this!!
Yogurt
Fruit
Coffee and tea
It was the perfect way to start our busy days exploring Normandy.

📍 Location: Walkable and Convenient
The hotel is located right in the center of Caen, making it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and the train station. We chose Caen as our base because we were doing the D‑Day Beaches tour and wanted to visit the Caen Memorial Museum — and this location worked beautifully for both.
If you’re debating between Caen and Bayeux, here’s the good news: they’re only about 20 minutes apart by train. You really can’t go wrong with either.
