After our recent Princess Cruises Mediterranean trip, our journey concluded in Athens. We had never been to Greece before this trip, but I had dreamed of it since high school. To start our adventure in Athens, I booked us a food tour! I have done food tours before, but nothing like this one! It was incredible! This was the best tour we did the whole trip! Learn about our Mediterranean cruise here.

I'll preface that I love to walk in a city! I love seeing the people, the food, and immersing myself in the city. I booked the tour on Viator and exceeded my expectations. They sent us a message several times, making sure we arrived hungry! It was a lot of food! They weren’t kidding! I am so glad I took their advice.

After the tour, my husband told me he had read on Reddit that some of the food tours in Athens were a scam. Thankfully, I read the reviews before booking.

We met our tour guide at our meeting spot. There were lots of people using this as a meeting spot. Our tour had a maximum of 12. So I was happy to see 4 smiling tour guides approach to handle this large group in the square. We gathered our group, and we were off. Our guide explained that he got to choose the places we visited.

We had the following stops:

Breakfast

At our first stop, we had 3 different kinds of pastries. We had a spinach-filled one, and another had cheese. We also had Galaktoboúreko. This was a custard-filled pastry and my personal favorite. It reminded me of Kringle from Wisconsin. Simply delicious.

Breakfast (again)

Stop 2 was another Breakfast item in Athens. The Loukoumádes - doughnuts! We had 3 variations on our tour: plain, chocolate (Nutella), and walnut. Pictured below is my favorite Nutella. Fresh and delicious!

Next up, Greek Coffee

Not only did we get to try some smooth Greek coffee, but we also got to see how they prepare it. I will admit I am a double espresso girl, so I like my coffee with a little more kick; their coffee is lower in caffeine. However, this was a lot of fun, and we even got my husband (a non-coffee drinker) to try it! They move the coffee in the sand to see when it is ready. Very cool experience!

Lunch with dessert

Our next stop was a feast! I don’t think I got pictures of everything. There was so much food that it kept coming! To start the meal, we tried ouza. I learned I am not a fan. Then we had wine while we ate and ate and ate. Some of my favorites from this meal: Eggplant cooked with garlic inside (oh my yum!), spicy feta dip, calamari, and the olives. We purchase the olives at the vegetable fruit market on the way to the restaurant.

We finished off this feast with real Greek yogurt and honey. Oh my word! It was delicious, nothing like we get in the States!

Dinner

At this point, everyone is stuffed, but our tour is not done! We had finished our tour with Gyros. Our tour guide was incredibly nice and got people to go gyros. However, I wanted mine fresh. We ate what we could as we walked back to our hotel at the Grand Hyatt Athens.

Athens Greece Food Tour

I enjoyed this tour so much! We met nice people, we enjoyed amazing food (oh so much food), and learned so much about Greek life. If you are looking for something to do in Athens. This is a great way to spend the day. We didn’t have to again until the next day! If you are interested in booking this tour via viator you can use my link here.
