If there’s a better combo than learning as you eat, I haven’t found it. This was my second food tour in New Orleans, and once again, it was time very well spent. Doctor Gumbo delivered exactly what I love about this city: bold flavors, great stories, and a guide who knows how to keep you laughing, hydrated, and cool — even on a steamy Louisiana afternoon.

Want to see the exact tour we booked? You can book the Doctor Gumbo Food Walking Tour through Get Your Guide (affiliate) or book direct— both options take you to the same great tour.

🌡️ Staying Cool with Beth (Our Hero of the Day)

Beth our tour guide from Dr Gumbo

Our Tour Guide Beth and me after a great tour

Our guide, Beth, deserves her own shoutout. She kept us shaded, refreshed, and entertained from start to finish. New Orleans humidity is no joke, but she made it feel manageable — dare I say, enjoyable.

New Orleans gets hot fast — we saw several people struggling with heat exhaustion on this trip. Two things I always pack for NOLA: a good sunscreen and a portable fan.

🥣 Stop #1: Gumbo… with Potatoes?

Chicken Gumbo with potato instead of rice

Gumbo with potato

We kicked things off inside (bless) with a bowl of gumbo that surprised everyone at the table. Instead of rice, it came with potatoes — and no, I’m not spoiling the reason why. You’ll have to take the tour to hear the story behind it. It’s a good one.

🥪 Stop #2: Shrimp Po’boys, Alligator Boudin & The Espresso Martini of Dreams

Shrimp Po'boy

Next up: a classic shrimp po’boy and a taste of alligator boudin. I added an espresso martini because Beth recommended it, and let me tell you — listen to Beth. She did not steer me wrong once.

🌶️ Stop #3: Hot Sauce Heaven

A hot sauce shop was our next adventure, complete with samples served over jambalaya. We tasted, we sweated, we bought a few bottles to bring home. Souvenirs with a kick.

🍬 Stop #4: Pralines at Layla’s

No trip to New Orleans is complete without pralines, and Layla’s delivered. Sweet, buttery perfection.

🍛 Stop #5: Red Beans, Rice & The Bread Pudding I’m Still Thinking About

Bananas Foster Bread Pudding

Our final stop served up the best red beans and rice I’ve had in the city — and then came the bananas foster bread pudding. I’m still thinking about both of these dishes. Honestly, I might always be.

🤝 New Friends, Good Food, and the Best Way to Explore the City

We made new friends, stayed surprisingly cool (for New Orleans), and ate our way through neighborhoods rich with history and flavor. It’s the kind of tour that reminds you why this city is magic.

I booked through Get Your Guide (affiliate).
