Points Stacking the Easy Way
Most people think the only way to earn more points is to open a new credit card… but that’s just one tiny piece of the puzzle.
When friends ask me how to start earning points — especially when they’re excited but their spouse isn’t quite ready for a new card — this is the exact list I give them. These are the simple, everyday habits that quietly build thousands of points in the background while you live your normal life.
No new cards. No complicated systems. No extra spending. Just smarter stacking with the purchases you already make.

⭐ Why This Matters
Most people underestimate how many points they can earn without opening a new card. These small habits — shopping portals, dining programs, bank offers, loyalty accounts — are the quiet engines that build your balances in the background.
You don’t need a bigger budget. You don’t need a complicated system. You don’t need to convince your spouse to open anything new.
You just need to stack smarter with the spending you already do.
These are the exact strategies that helped us earn flights, hotel nights, cruise credits, and National Parks trips long before we ever opened a single “points card.” Once you learn how to stack the easy wins, everything else becomes optional.
✈️ 1. Use Airline Shopping Portals (The Easiest Win)
If you shop online at all — Target, Nike, Sephora, Home Depot, Sam’s Club — you could be earning bonus airline miles on top of your credit card points.
You simply click through a portal before you shop.

👉 I use Rakuten for most purchases because it earns Amex points
This is one of the biggest “free points” opportunities most people miss.

🍽️ 2. Join Airline Dining Programs
Every major airline has a dining rewards program that gives you miles when you eat at participating restaurants.
You just link your card once and forget about it.

United MileagePlus Dining

💳 3. Activate Bank Offers (Chase, Amex, Citi)
Bank offers are one of the most underrated ways to earn:
Cashback
Statement credits
Bonus points
These stack beautifully with shopping portals.
I check my offers weekly and add anything I might use — grocery stores, travel brands, clothing, home improvement, etc.

🛍️ 4. Use Store Loyalty Programs (They Stack!)
Most stores have their own loyalty programs that work in addition to your credit card points.
Examples:
Sephora Beauty Insider
Ulta Rewards
Nike Membership
Target Circle
Sam’s Club
Booking.com Genius
You earn store rewards + credit card points + portal miles. Triple stack.
🧠 5. Use Cashback Apps That Convert to Points
Some apps let you earn cashback that can be turned into travel rewards — and they stack beautifully with your credit card points.
My favorites:
Rakuten → Amex Membership Rewards(perfect for everyday shopping)
Rove Miles → airline and hotel points(great for travel‑focused purchases)
Rove is a newer portal built specifically for travelers — it lets you earn miles directly with your favorite airlines and hotels, even if you don’t open a new card. I started using it earlier this year because I wanted to test it before recommending it, and so far I’m genuinely impressed.
I use Rove for travel‑related stores and brands that don’t always show up on Rakuten, and it’s quickly become my backup portal when I’m not earning Amex points.
Here’s what I’ve earned in just the last five months — all from everyday purchases I was already making.

🧳 6. Book Direct to Use Your Perks (With One Smart Exception)
For most hotel stays, I book direct so I can use all the perks that come with my credit cards and loyalty programs — things like upgrades, breakfast, late checkout, bonus points, and elite night credits. Those benefits add real value to every stay, and booking direct is the easiest way to make sure you get them.
But there is one exception I love: You can book certain hotel stays through Rove and double dip — earning miles and still receiving your hotel perks.
Rove clearly labels which hotel stays are perk‑eligible, so you’ll know before you book. We tested this during our Hyatt Place Denver stay and earned miles on top of our usual Hyatt perks.
So here’s my simple rule:
Book direct for most hotel stays so you get your perks
Use Rove when the stay is marked as perk‑eligible and you can double dip
This keeps your perks intact while stacking extra miles when the opportunity is right.

🛒 7. Buy Gift Cards Through Portals or Grocery Stores
If you’re already buying:
Amazon
Target
Restaurants
Gas
Home improvement stores
…you can earn extra points by buying gift cards through:
Grocery stores (3x or 4x categories)
Shopping portals
Office supply stores (5x cards if applicable)
Then use the gift card normally.
🎁 8. Take Advantage of Seasonal Bonuses
Example of a seasonal bonus I earned
Airline and bank portals run promos like:
Spend $150, get 500 bonus miles
Spend $300, get 1,000 bonus miles
Extra points for holiday shopping
These stack with everything else.
📦 9. Use Subscriptions Strategically
Many subscriptions earn bonus points through portals or bank offers:
Walmart+
Cook Unity (Get $30 off with your first purchase with code GET30OFF)
Streaming services
Beauty boxes
Check portals before you sign up — many offer 500–2,000 bonus miles.

📝 Final Thoughts
You don’t need a new credit card to earn more points. You just need to stack smarter.
Shopping portals, dining programs, bank offers, loyalty programs, and seasonal bonuses can easily add thousands of extra miles to your balances every year — without changing your budget.
Start with one or two of these habits and watch your points grow.
