✈️ Why I Always Pay My Flight Taxes & Fees With My Chase Sapphire Card

taxes and fees with chase sapphire card

I got an excellent question yesterday, and I realized it’s something I should answer publicly because it comes up all the time — especially in my group.

Why do I pay my flight taxes and fees with my Chase Sapphire card? Even when the flight itself is booked with points?

It’s simple: That tiny little payment activates the travel insurance benefits that come with the card.

These protections are included in your annual fee, and they’re worth way more than people realize.

And I only write what I know… and I know all about flights being cancelled, delayed, and plans going sideways.

This post may contain affiliate links for products or services I personally use and recommend. I do not use affiliate links for credit cards — only personal referral links for the cards I personally hold. As always, I only write what I know and only recommend what I use.

🌧️ Real Life: My Four Weather Cancellations Last Year

Last year alone, I had four flights cancelled due to weather.

Airlines don’t cover weather cancellations. They owe you nothing. No hotel room, No Meal Vouchers, No Uber.

But thanks to my Chase Sapphire card, I saved every receipt — hotel, meals, transportation — and I was reimbursed. No drama. No fighting. Just coverage doing what it’s supposed to do.

🏨 My Miami Hotel Example (This One Shocked Me)

I have a full post about our Miami hotel stay, but here’s the short version:

We spent more on our extra night after a cancelled flight than we did on our entire trip.

Let that sink in.

If I hadn’t paid my flight taxes and fees with my Sapphire card, that entire unexpected expense would have been out of pocket.

Instead, I submitted the receipts and was reimbursed.

This is why I always say: Don’t leave benefits behind.

💳 My Parents’ Annual Policy vs My Chase Card (Real Comparison)

During our cancelled flight in Miami, my parents used their annual travel insurance policy, and I used my Chase Sapphire card. And here’s the honest truth:

My Chase card paid out better than their annual coverage.

Same delay. Same airport. Same situation. Two completely different outcomes.

But — and this is important — luckily they had their policy, because it did offset some of their expenses. Their coverage wasn’t useless; it just wasn’t as strong or as fast as my Chase reimbursement.

This is why I always say: I’m not anti‑insurance. I’m anti‑fear‑mongering. Use the benefits you already have, and fill the gaps where you need to.

And I only write about what I’ve personally experienced — not what I’ve heard, not what someone else claims, not what a brochure promises. Just real trips, real delays, real claims, and real outcomes.

🚢 My Norway Cruise Example (Three Claims in a Row!)

I had three trips in a row where I had to file travel claims — including our Norway cruise.

Here’s how it broke down:

  • Delta covered our hotel for the night we were stranded.

  • But my Chase Sapphire insurance covered:

    • the non‑refundable London hotel we missed

    • the extra meals Delta didn’t cover

    • the additional expenses that weren’t airline‑related

This is exactly how credit card travel insurance is supposed to work: Airline covers what they’re responsible for. Your card fills the gaps.

🌩️ Our Houston Delay: The Night I Didn’t Panic

This summer, we were delayed in Houston after a weather delay leaving New Orleans. And instead of freaking out — like everyone else around us — I sat there calmly knowing it was all covered.

We booked the airport hotel, had a fancy late‑night meal, ordered wine, and crashed in the room… all of it covered by my Chase Sapphire travel protections.

That’s the difference between:

  • scrambling

  • stressing

  • wondering what’s going to happen

and

  • calmly pivoting

  • saving receipts

  • knowing you’ll be reimbursed

This is Lazy Girl travel: Prepared, not panicked.

💳 What About Other Cards?

I know many cards offer travel protections — Amex Platinum, Citi Premier, various airline cards, and more. But I only write about what I’ve personally used and filed claims with.

I’m not here to list every card on the market or pretend I’ve tested them all. I’m here to tell you what actually happened to me, what worked, and how these protections saved me money on real trips.

When I say a benefit works, it’s because I’ve lived through:

  • weather cancellations

  • missed hotels

  • overnight delays

  • extra meals

  • medical expenses

  • and three claims in a row during my Norway trip

If I haven’t used a card’s coverage myself, I won’t teach it — because that’s not my brand.

🌍 Let’s Talk About Medical Coverage

Right now, I have GeoBlue, so my health insurance works worldwide. That’s important because:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve’s medical coverage is limited

  • Venture X’s medical coverage is similar — helpful, but not comprehensive

  • These cards are meant to fill gaps, not replace real travel medical insurance

And yes — we did use the Reserve’s medical coverage in Las Vegas, and it worked exactly as advertised. Health insurance paid first. Chase covered the rest (minus the $50 deductible).

This is why I always say: Use the benefits you already have. Fill the gaps where you need to. Travel smarter, not scared.

🧠 Is This Enough Coverage for You?

I don’t know — only you can decide what’s right for your comfort level.

My goal is simply to make sure you don’t leave benefits behind because you didn’t know how they work.

🤝 A Quick Note About Travel Insurance Partnerships

One of my biggest complaints about the travel influencer world is how often people fear‑monger you into buying travel insurance… without ever explaining:

  • what you’re actually buying

  • what it covers

  • what it doesn’t cover

  • whether you even need it

  • or how it works with your points, miles, and credit card benefits

That’s not my vibe. I don’t scare people into spending money. I teach you how to not leave benefits behind.

I’m currently talking with a company that understands points, miles, and credit card coverage — and wants to fill the gaps, not replace what you already have.

That’s the first time I’ve actually been interested in partnering with someone in this space.

Because that’s exactly how I think about travel protection: Layered. Logical. No fear. No upsell. No drama.

If the partnership moves forward, I’ll add it here — but the post stands on its own because this is my real experience, not a sales pitch.

💼 The Cards I Keep in My Wallet

These are the cards I personally use — and the ones that earn points back to me and my family.
