⭐ The Claim Story I Wish I Could Have Found
If you’re new to Chase travel protections, start with the benefits I actually use in my Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide — it’s the foundation for all of these stories.
I had been looking forward to this trip for months — a 3‑day cruise with my best friends, our first time all traveling together in five years. I even built in a buffer and booked my flight two days early, thinking I was being responsible and giving myself the best chance of avoiding any issues.
But Florida was getting hammered by storms.
As the day went on, more and more flights were canceled. Mine kept getting delayed… then delayed again… until finally, nine hours after I arrived at the airport, it was officially canceled. The airline rebooked me — for a flight that would land the night before the cruise ended.
There was no way to get to Fort Lauderdale in time. It was devastating. I had done everything “right.”
And here’s the ironic part: I was the only one flying direct. I assumed that meant I had the best odds of getting there. My friends all had connections, and somehow they made it to Florida. Their flights were canceled too, but at least they were already in the state. Two rented a car and drove across Florida, and another took the Brightline. Meanwhile, I was the only one who missed the cruise — even though I gave myself an extra day.
😊If you’re getting ready for your next sailing, my Cruise Hub and my 10 Cruise Essentials list are great places to start.
⭐ The $5.60 That Saved the Entire Trip
Even though I booked my flights with points, I paid the $5.60 taxes and fees with my Chase Sapphire card.
And that tiny $5.60 charge meant my entire trip was covered.
Chase reimbursed me for the cruise (minus the portion the cruise line refunded — at the time, just taxes and fees). I missed the trip, but I wasn’t out of the money too.
⭐ What Chase Needed to Approve My Claim
This claim was filed a few years ago, so I don’t remember every single document — but I do remember the essentials Chase asked for. At the time, the process was handled through Virginia Surety, and they required a few key items to verify the situation.
Here’s what I submitted (or remember submitting):
Proof of payment — the $5.60 charge on my Chase Sapphire card that triggered coverage
Cruise booking confirmation — showing the dates, total cost, and cancellation terms
Flight cancellation documentation — screenshots of the airline delay and cancellation notices
Refund details from the cruise line — they refunded only taxes and fees, which Chase deducted from the reimbursement
Claim form and timeline summary — a short explanation of what happened and when
It wasn’t complicated, but it did require patience — especially since I was filing after the fact. Chase’s documentation requirements may have changed since then, so always check the current policy before submitting.
⭐ How I File Chase Claims Now (After Filing… a Lot of Them)
And here’s the part I wish someone had told me before I ever filed my first claim:
I now submit my Chase claims with only the basics first — and wait for Chase to send me the exact list of documents they need.
When I first started, I tried to upload everything upfront. But every time I did, Chase would come back asking for something slightly different… which meant re‑uploading documents, renaming files, and getting frustrated.
After filing multiple claims, here’s the system that works so much better:
I submit the claim with the bare minimum (proof of payment + a short explanation).
Chase (Virginia Surety) reviews it and sends a personalized checklist of exactly what they need for that specific claim.
I upload only what they ask for — once.
It’s faster, cleaner, and avoids the back‑and‑forth.
For this missed cruise claim, they did reach out for clarification because I wasn’t the only one in the cabin. They needed to confirm which portion of the cruise fare was mine and what the cruise line refunded. Once I provided that, the claim moved forward.
This approach has made every claim since then so much easier — and it’s the method I recommend to beginners now.
⭐ Why I Started Writing About Chase Claims
When this happened, I searched everywhere trying to find someone who had actually gone through a Chase Sapphire travel insurance claim — not the generic “here’s what’s covered” language, but a real person explaining what happened, what they submitted, and whether Chase actually paid.
I couldn’t find anything.
That’s honestly why I started blogging about my own experiences. I wanted to create the resource I couldn’t find. I had no idea I would end up filing multiple claims in less than two years and accidentally become the person who knows way too much about Chase travel insurance… but here we are.
That experience completely changed how I think about travel insurance. Since then, Chase has covered:
Bonus days in Miami when flights were delayed (full story in my Hyatt Regency Miami review)
An emergency room visit(my Las Vegas medical claim)
A denied claim that was later approved on appeal (Denied… Until It Wasn’t)
It’s why I always tell beginners: Points get you there. The right card protects the trip.
