Where We Stayed: Marriott Whitefish Review
We based ourselves in Whitefish, a charming mountain town just outside Kalispell, and stayed at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott — a clean, modern hotel only 12 minutes from the airport. The staff was incredibly friendly, and our room included a kitchenette. I had zero intention of cooking on this trip, but the fridge was perfect for cold drinks after long days in the park.
If you’re planning a national park trip using points, I break down our full strategy in my Beginner Guide to Points & Miles.
Exploring Whitefish & Kalispell
The location of our hotel was extremely convenient:
A Chinese restaurant and Subway were right across the street
Starbucks was a short walk away
Downtown Whitefish was only 1.5 miles from the hotel
The hotel offered a nightly shuttle, but we drove the three times we visited town. The town square had a lively, welcoming vibe with shops, restaurants, and even a Tuesday farmers’ market with live music. We were surprised by how busy it was at 5 PM the day after Labor Day — Whitefish knows how to keep the energy going.
Driving Going-to-the-Sun Road: What to Know
Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road absolutely lived up to the hype — and definitely tested our nerves. Until this trip, Beartooth Pass held the title for our most intense drive, but this one took it up a notch. With steep drop‑offs, winding curves, and jaw‑dropping views, it’s both breathtaking and a little stressful. I was more than happy to let my husband drive.
We ended up driving the full stretch all three days of our visit, and each time felt just as magical.
Reservation Tips
Reservations are essential. The National Park Service updates the entry system annually, so check the latest requirements. For our September trip, I booked our vehicle pass in May — and I’m glad I did.
If you miss out on a reservation, you still have options:
Enter from the east side (rules vary by year)
Book a Glacier National Park Boat Tour, which grants access

Lake Mary Boat Tour: Scenic Views & Surprising Moose Facts
On our second day, we took the Lake Mary boat tour, and it was the perfect way to rest our feet while still soaking in the scenery. One highlight was spotting a glacier completely hidden from the road — such a cool surprise.
We also learned that Glacier National Park currently has 26 active glaciers (based on the last official survey). And here’s a fun fact I had to double‑check: moose can dive up to 20 feet underwater. Wild.
🏔️ Logan Pass: Parking, Trails & Wildlife
Logan Pass is always busy — so be prepared to hike uphill just to reach the trailhead. On our final morning, we left before sunrise hoping to snag a parking spot. We arrived at 8:10 AM and the lot was already full. The closest parking was about ⅓ mile downhill, which meant a steep walk up just to get started.
We didn’t hike all the way to the lake due to bear activity that day. After watching a few intense YouTube videos, I had zero interest in a close encounter. I take bear safety seriously — especially after a run‑in back in 1989 (long story, but we all made it out okay).
The trail is uphill nearly the entire way, but the boardwalk sections help with footing. We even spotted a family of bighorn sheep in the distance — such a cool sight.
🌄 Many Glacier: Our Favorite Spot
Many Glacier was hands‑down my favorite part of the park. The views are unreal — I could have sat at the hotel there all day just staring out the windows.
A few notes:
Parking is tough, but we found a spot
The last stretch of road is unpaved
Expect a slow, bumpy ride
Totally worth it.

🍽️ Glacier National Park Food Tips
Food is very limited inside the park. My family loves a warm lunch, so we planned our days around being near a meal option at lunchtime.
We ate at Two Dog Flats at Rising Sun twice and at the hotel in Many Glacier once. For park food, it was good and reasonably priced. Living outside Nashville, we’re used to higher prices, so this felt like a win.
Definitely pack snacks and drinks — you never know how long it will take to get anywhere. On our last day, I spotted a bear standing on the other side of the road. By the time we parked (a safe distance away), it wandered off in the opposite direction. Thank goodness.
