I haven’t flown Southwest much lately — I’ve been choosing other airlines more and more — but back in June I grabbed a ridiculously cheap points flight to Puerto Rico. It was only 11,500 points each, which is basically unheard of for Nashville → San Juan.

Did I love the timing? Absolutely not. Landing at 11:35 PM in San Juan is not my idea of a cute arrival time… but the deal was too good to pass up, so I booked it anyway.

And because we have a cruise out of San Juan the very next day, our dates were already locked in. So even though the timing wasn’t ideal, I was going to roll with it.

Fast‑forward to today: Southwest flights went on sale, so I was checking the differential… and noticed our original flight had been rescheduled. Not by much — but just enough that Southwest quietly unlocked the magic button:

Free rebooking.

So you KNOW I jumped on that.

I moved us to the direct Nashville → San Juan flight that’s currently pricing at 42,000 points each.

And we’re still paying… 11,500 points. Each.

This is the Southwest trick no one talks about — and it’s one of the easiest wins in travel hacking.

If you’re new to points and miles and want to learn the simple system I use to book flights like this, start with my Beginner Points Guide. It’s the easiest way to earn your first free flight without overwhelm.

⭐ What Is the Southwest Free Rebooking Trick?

Southwest has a little‑known policy that quietly benefits travelers:

If Southwest changes your flight — even by a small amount — you can change your flight for free, even if the new flight is significantly more expensive.

This means:

  • You can switch to a better time

  • You can switch to a better route

  • You can switch to a direct flight

  • You can switch to a flight that costs way more points

…all without paying the difference.

It’s one of the most powerful Southwest points strategies because it requires zero effort beyond checking your booking occasionally.

⭐ How My 11,500‑Point Flight Turned Into a 42,000‑Point Flight

Here’s exactly how it played out:

  • I booked a cheap Southwest points flight to San Juan for 11,500 points

  • The timing wasn’t great (11:35 PM arrival), but the price was too good

  • Our cruise leaves the next morning, so the date was non‑negotiable

  • Today, Southwest ran a sale and I checked to see if a better flight had price dropped

  • I noticed our flight had been rescheduled

  • That tiny schedule change unlocked free rebooking

  • I switched us to the direct flight

  • That direct flight currently costs 42,000 points

  • We still paid 11,500 points

This is why I still peek at Southwest even when I’m not flying them as much — the schedule‑change trick is chef’s kiss when it works in your favor.

⭐ Why This Works (Even If You Don’t Fly Southwest Often)

Southwest changes schedules all the time — especially:

  • Seasonal routes

  • Caribbean flights

  • Weekend flights

  • Early morning or late‑night flights

Even a small shift (like 10–20 minutes) can unlock free rebooking.

And because Southwest doesn’t charge change fees, you can move to a flight that costs dramatically more points without paying the difference.

It’s one of the easiest ways to “upgrade” your travel without spending anything extra.

⭐ How to Check for Schedule Changes

You don’t need to obsessively monitor your flights — just check occasionally.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Log into your Southwest account

  2. Go to My Trips

  3. Look for any yellow banners or “Flight Change” notifications

  4. If you see a change, click Change Flight

  5. Browse all available flights for your date

  6. Pick the better one — even if it’s way more expensive

If Southwest changed your flight, you won’t pay the difference.

⭐ When This Trick Saves the Most Points

This hack is especially powerful for:

  • Caribbean flights (San Juan, Aruba, Montego Bay, etc.)

  • Holiday travel

  • Peak season weekends

  • Direct flights

  • Early morning or late‑night flights

These flights often cost 2–4× more points — which is why my 11,500‑point booking jumped to a 42,000‑point flight.
