San Diego Travel: Free Flights, Free Hotel, and More
San Diego Travel
San Diego has always been on our family’s travel wish list, and back in 2023, we made it happen — almost entirely for free. Thanks to points, miles, and a little travel hacking strategy, we enjoyed an unforgettable getaway with minimal out-of-pocket costs. My grandparents were married in San Diego, during WW2, and I have always wanted to visit to see where they lived. Our family loves history, so my family agreed to join me for this adventure.

Free Flights with Southwest Rapid Rewards
We flew to San Diego using Southwest Rapid Rewards points, and the Companion Pass made it even sweeter. With one ticket booked on points, the second was free (just taxes and fees). For a family trip, this perk is unbeatable — it’s like doubling the value of your points. When my boys were younger, the Southwest Companion Pass was a family staple. Now that they are older, I am not using it as much, so I didn’t even attempt to get it for 2026.
Travel Hack Highlight: The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the most powerful tools in family travel. Once earned, it allows a designated companion to fly free with you for the life of the pass.

Free Stay at the Grand Hyatt Manchester
Our home base was the Grand Hyatt Manchester, located right on the waterfront. Using World of Hyatt points, we booked our stay without paying a dime for the room. We had enough points for 2 rooms at this location. We are on a totally different sleeping schedule than our teens so this keeps every one happy!
Travel Hack Highlight: Hyatt points consistently deliver outsized value, especially at premium properties like the Grand Hyatt. The location was fantastic. Every morning while our boys still slept my husband would get out and walk. The farmers’ market in Little Italy was amazing! If you are there when it is happening, I highly recommend visiting.

No Rental Car Needed
One of the best parts of this trip was how walkable San Diego felt. Between the hotel’s central location and easy access to attractions, we didn’t need a rental car. That saved us money and hassle, while letting us enjoy the city at a slower pace. We walked to the zoo from the hotel which might have been a little far in hindsight, but we did Uber/Lyft back.
San Diego Zoo
A highlight for the whole family was the world-famous San Diego Zoo. From giant pandas to lush exhibits, it was an educational and fun day for everyone. Yep! I totally regretted walking to the zoo when I realized how huge it was. Our feet hurt, but it was worth it! Again, it’s a quick uber/lyft ride back to the hotel.
USS Midway Museum
We stepped aboard the historic USS Midway, exploring the aircraft carrier’s decks, planes, and interactive exhibits. It was a fascinating glimpse into naval history and a favorite stop for both kids and adults. My sons and husband could have spent all day here! I think we practically did. Be sure to speak to the living history volunteers as you explore the museum. They have the best stories.
Maritime Museum of San Diego
The Ship Museum was another gem, with historic vessels like the Star of India. Walking through these ships gave us a sense of adventure and history all at once. This ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. At the Maritime Museum, they mentioned they were taking the swiftboat out later in the day. My guys’ faces all lit up. I told them we could miss our other, not as exciting boat ride I had scheduled and do this one instead. This made them so happy.

Takeaway: Points Make Family Travel Possible
This San Diego trip was proof that with ,a small amount of travel hacking skills, family travel can be affordable. Free flights, free hotel nights, and walkable attractions made it a budget-friendly yet unforgettable experience.
Beginner Tip: Start with one airline and one hotel program. Southwest and Hyatt are a perfect combo for families — easy to earn, easy to redeem, and packed with value.
