For my husband’s upcoming birthday, we are skipping the presents and booking a wine weekend in Paso Robles—using points and miles to cover flights, hotels, and even a luxury resort. This post breaks down exactly how we did it: from using point.me to find Flying Blue and Qantas award flights, to stacking our Capital One Venture X travel credit for a vineyard stay. If you’re dreaming of a California wine escape without the price tag, this guide shows how to make it happen.

Why We Chose Paso Robles for a Birthday Trip

For his upcoming birthday, I have booked a trip to Paso Robles, CA. We are wine lovers. We have been to Napa a few times. We have been enjoying some of the Paso Robles wines for the past few years, so I thought this would be a great place to visit and somewhere new for us. We love visiting new places.

How We Booked Flights Using Flying Blue and Qantas Miles

Thanks to credit card points, we are flying to Los Angeles and then driving to Paso Robles. I looked at flying into several airports for this trip. However, it made the most sense to us to fly to Los Angeles nonstop and then drive up to Paso Robles. We are flying to LA on Delta using Flying Blue miles. Flying Blue is a transfer partner with Capital One, Chase, and American Express. Since I never know which airline will have the best deal point-wise, I like to keep my points with cards that have transferable partners for the most options. For our flights home, we are flying back on American Airlines. It was cheaper to book that ticket using Qantas miles instead of American Miles. How did I figure this out? I use the website Point.me to help me with all my award searches.

Using Point.me to Find Award Flights

For flights, I used the website point.me to find availability. There are lots of options for award searches and flights. This is the one I use. I like that it breaks it down like I am 5 years old for the whole process.

Booking Hotels with Capital One Travel Credit

When searching for a hotel, my first instinct is to check Hyatt. I love Hyatt points for travel. They have the best deals when redeeming points and miles. However, there weren’t any close to where I wanted to stay. After a fabulous year of travel on points and miles, I don’t have any Marriott rewards or Hilton Honors. I remembered I had a $300 travel credit with Capital One. My husband gets this credit annually from his Capital One Venture X card. I searched the hotels they had available and found Allegretto Vineyards, and I thought, perfect! This resort not only looks amazing, but it has amazing reviews. I was able to book us there with the credit for less than $700. We will need to head back to Los Angeles before our flight home. I booked us the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles Airport. We stayed here a few years ago on points. It is a great hotel and a great location! You cannot beat free on points.

Travel Hacks We Used

Point.me helped us find award flights across multiple programs—Flying Blue for outbound, Qantas for return.

Capital One Venture X travel credit covered nice part our luxury resort stay.

Hyatt points gave us a free night near LAX before flying home.

No presents, just experiences—this birthday trip was our gift to each other.
