How I Saved $300 on a Holland America Cruise: Step-by-Step

🚢 Step 1: Watch for Price Drops

Mary — my friend and cruise agent — and I have been hooked on Holland America since our sailing last December. When we started eyeing a 4-day cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, the price wasn't quite right. So we watched.

And watched.

Eventually, the price dropped to $880 per person for an obstructed ocean view cabin. Since we don't spend much time in the room (we're too busy exploring the ship and eating our way through the dining room), an obstructed view was perfect. A little natural light for my claustrophobia, and I'm good.

This is where having a cruise agent pays off — literally.

Mary scored us an extra $100 onboard credit when she booked our sailing. That's $100 we could use for drinks, excursions, specialty dining, or spa treatments — essentially free money on top of our already-reduced fare.

I found an Amex Offer for $300 off a $750+ Holland America purchase. I added the offer to my card, paid for the cruise with that card, and within a week the $300 statement credit hit my account.

Here's why this matters: Amex Offers refresh regularly, and each of your Amex cards can have different offers available. Holland America Amex Offers have historically ranged from $200 to $300 off — and they come back multiple times a year. But they're targeted, so you have to check your own cards.

How to find Amex Offers:

• Open the Amex app

• Tap "Offers" at the bottom

• Search for "Holland America" or browse the travel category

• Add the offer to your card BEFORE you make the purchase

• Pay for the cruise with that card

I booked my Nashville-to-Ft. Lauderdale flight using 10,549 Southwest Rapid Rewards points. No cash out of pocket for the flight.

Southwest is one of my go-to airlines for domestic award flights because:

• No change fees (ever)

• Points are easy to earn with Chase transfer partners

• Nashville (BNA) has solid Southwest coverage to Florida

I could have used Hyatt points for a free night at the Hyatt Place Dania Beach (which is right near the Ft. Lauderdale cruise port), but since Mary lives nearby, I stayed with her this time.
