My Experience with Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance

Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance After a Canceled Flight

While on our MSC cruise, I was getting weather alerts from my husband saying I needed to keep an eye on my flight home. A huge snowstorm was coming to Nashville and I most likely would not get home Friday. We could move our flight to the next day when the forecast was much better. I kept an eye on my original flight and when it was canceled, I requested a letter from Southwest Airlines for proof of delay. I needed that to file a claim with my Chase Sapphire Reserve travel delay benefit.

We had to stay an extra day in Miami. Miami is a great place to be stranded; there is much to do. However, it is also expensive. I was relieved that even though I paid for my airline tickets with points, I had used my Chase Sapphire Reserve card for the $11.20 each for my and my son’s flights. Flight cancellation due to weather is a covered event.

After we exited the ship, I started saving my receipts for everything. First, we knew we needed a hotel room. I put us at the Hyatt Regency Miami even though I have points I paid for this stay with my credit card. I will get reimbursed for our expenses up to $500 per person. We had to eat several meals out an unexpected expense. Plus we needed an Uber ride to the airport from the hotel. This added up to over $700 in expenses for our extra day in Miami.

When we got home I had all my stuff lined up to submit my claim. Here is what Chase requested from me:

  1. Chase Credit Card statement showing the flight was paid for with my Reserve Card.

  2. Itemized sales receipts of all our expenses

  3. Travel itinerary showing our original trip

  4. Proof Of Delay from Common Carrier

I uploaded all my items and filed my claim. This was my 2nd claim. Both times, I have been asked for the items I have already sent twice. However, I just resubmitted all the same info, and my claim was paid in full on February 25, 2025.
