What to Expect on Your First Cruise Experience

Getting on a cruise ship for the first time can be exciting and overwhelming. With so much to see, do, and plan for, it helps to know what’s ahead. Even though I am a frequent cruiser, I still get a little nervous before I head out on a new ship or a new port. Here’s a guide to help first-time cruisers feel confident from embarkation to disembarkation. Take a deep breath, you can do this! I went from a never cruiser to being obsessed with cruising. Here is what to expect so you can enjoy your cruise faster!

Before You Board: What to Expect on Embarkation Day

  • Arrival at the Port: Expect lines for security and check-in, similar to an airport but usually smoother. This can be a frustrating process. I try to keep in mind they are herding 1000’s of people who have no idea what to do next.

Boarding the Ship: You’ll be greeted by crew members and directed to your cabin. Your luggage may arrive later, so keep essentials in a carry-on. Be sure to have your passport in your carry-on and any medications you may need before you get your luggage. If you board early, you might have to wait to get to your cabin. Find a great place to chill out while you wait.

  • Safety Drill: Mandatory muster drills ensure you know where to go in case of an emergency. There is usually a safety video you watch before you take sail. Sometimes you can watch this on your phone and other times you have to watch in your cabin. This depends on the cruise line.

What to Expect From Your Cruise Cabin

My son and I in Skjolden Norway - Sky Princess in the back

  • Cabins: Cabins can be small. Storage space is tight, so pack smart.

  • Dining: From buffets to specialty restaurants, a wide variety of food is available. Most meals are included, but some venues may cost extra, such as speciality restaurants.

  • Entertainment: Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, live music, and themed parties keep evenings lively.

  • Activities: Pools, fitness centers, trivia games, and kids’ clubs offer something for everyone.

Ports of Call

  • Excursions: You can book through the cruise line or explore independently. I personally do both depending on my comfort level. Check out my cruise port recommendations here: Cruise Port Guide - My reviews

  • Timing: Ships run on strict schedules—be back onboard before departure! You do not want to be left behind!

  • Local Tips: Ports often have shopping, beaches, or cultural sites within walking distance. I have a list of ports I have visited that require no shore excursions Best Cruise Ports in the Caribbean

    Money & Perks

  • Onboard Charges: Most ships use a cashless system linked to your cruise card.

  • Gratuities: Often added automatically, but you can adjust at guest services.

  • Travel Hacks: Use points, miles, or casino offers to save on fares. This is my speciality. Check out these posts for inspiration:

Disembarkation: Heading Home

  • Process: You’ll be assigned a disembarkation group. Expect lines, but staff keep things moving.

  • Tip: Keep essentials handy—your luggage may be waiting in a designated hall.

  • Flight Home - Don’t schedule your flight home too early. I always try to book mine at least after noon or later, depending on the port.
