Why I Pack Totally Differently for the Mediterranean vs. the Caribbean

mediterranean vs Caribbean Packing secrets

🌸 Two Cruise Regions, Two Completely Different Vibes

If you’ve cruised both the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, you already know: they may both be “cruise vacations,” but they deliver completely different experiences. And because the vibe, pace, and daily rhythm are so different, the way I pack — and the way I explore these ports — ends up being totally different too.

I cruise both regions often, but I don’t approach them the same way. And honestly? That’s what makes cruising so fun.

🩵 Mediterranean: My Exploring Mode

When I’m sailing the Med, I’m in full explorer mode. These ports are packed with history, culture, architecture, food, and those magical “I can’t believe I’m here” moments around every corner. My days look like:

  • Long walking routes

  • Ancient ruins and cathedrals

  • Cafés and markets

  • Scenic overlooks

  • DIY city days

  • Comfortable walking shoes (Reefs are my go‑to — see my 10 Cruise Essentials)

  • A crossbody bag and layers

I’m not heading to the beach — I’m heading into cities. And because of that, my Med packing looks completely different.

What I don’t pack for the Med

  • Water pouch for my phone

  • Water shoes

  • Beach bag

  • Multiple swimsuits

Most of my “water time” is actually onboard in the thermal spa — my happy place — so all the beach gear stays home.

What I do pack for the Med

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Crossbody bag

  • Street clothes

  • Light layers

  • Hat, sunscreen, water bottle

If you want to see exactly how I spend my time in these ports — the walking routes I love, the easy DIY days, and the can’t‑miss food stops — explore my Mediterranean port guides.

🌺 Caribbean: My Beach Mode

The Caribbean flips the vibe completely. These ports are sunshine, beaches, breezy outfits, snorkeling, catamarans, and that slow island rhythm that makes everything feel easier. My days look like:

  • Beach time

  • Snorkeling

  • Catamaran excursions

  • Flip flops and cover‑ups

  • Water shoes and my beach bag

  • Reef‑safe sunscreen

  • Multiple swimsuits - I love Bleu Rod Beattie

Except for my Southern Caribbean trip with Tanner (who hates the beach — the exception that proves the rule), the Caribbean is where I shift into full relaxation mode.

Same Julie, same suitcase — totally different priorities.

💗 How I Book Shore Excursions (and Save Money)

I get asked this all the time, so here’s my honest, first‑hand strategy:

1. I book DIY days whenever possible

The Med is full of ports where you can walk right off the ship and explore on your own. This saves money and gives you more freedom.

2. I compare cruise‑line excursions with third‑party options

I always check:

Then I compare price, duration, and cancellation policies.

3. I book early — but only when needed

Caribbean catamarans and snorkel tours fill up fast. Med walking tours? Usually more flexible.

4. I use cashback portals

Rakuten, Rove Miles, and even some credit cards offer cashback on excursions booked through partners.

5. I use a no‑foreign‑transaction‑fee card

This saves money every single time I book or pay abroad.

🌞 Final Thoughts: Two Regions, Two Mindsets

Cruising the Med and cruising the Caribbean are both incredible — but they’re not the same trip. And your suitcase shouldn’t be either.

The Med is exploring. The Caribbean is relaxing.

Your port days will reflect that. So your planning should too.

If you’re heading to either region soon, explore my port guides and pack smarter — not more.
