Out with the old, in with the new credit cards

This month we added a new card and got rid of a card. Here is what we got, what we got rid of, and why:

First, my husband added the Chase Hyatt Personal Card. I love traveling on Chase Hyatt points. Their most recent offer for a sign-up bonus caught my eye. If you spend $4000 in 3 months, you get 5 free night certificates (CAT 1 - 4). Here is a link here. Before I pull the trigger on any credit card, I like to think about how exactly I would use the sign-up bonus. We stay at many Hyatts thanks to credit card rewards and points. I have already booked quite a bit of travel for 2025 for free on points. I needed to make sure we could use it since the certificates expire within a year.

I also needed to make sure there were hotels where we would want to stay, and I would be able to use these certificates. Some of our favorite category 1-4 hotels with Hyatt have been or currently are booked:

Grand Hyatt San Diego

Tamaya Resort New Mexico

Hyatt Place Las Vegas

Linder Hotel Prague Castle

Hyatt Regency Miami

Hyatt Place Seattle/Downtown

Hyatt Place Knoxville

For our upcoming travels, I need hotels for Rome and Athens later next year. I also like to schedule a long weekend or two out of town with my husband during the year, which will come in handy. I currently have a Hyatt card but my husband does not. We applied for the card in his name. This will give him discoverist status with Hyatt. This will help him get early check-in or late check-out in some hotels. This comes in handy when cruising Virgin. They board later than other cruise lines.

As for getting rid of a card, we got rid of my husband’s Southwest Card. Why? My husband has had this card for over 2 years. He is eligible to get the sign-up bonus again. We can always use Southwest points, so we canceled it to get the sign-up bonus again. We still love the card. I try to get as many points as possible. I looked at mine, and it has been almost 2 years as well. I will cancel soon and look for a good sign-up offer.
