Makoto Ocean on Sun Princess

If you love sushi, modern Japanese cuisine, or elevated specialty dining at sea, Makoto Ocean is one of the most exciting restaurants on Princess Cruises right now. Created in partnership with celebrity chef Makoto Okuwa, this venue brings Edomae‑style sushi, premium cuts, and beautifully plated dishes to select Princess ships — and it’s quickly becoming a fan favorite.

Our 8-Course Sushi Experience

We had the Premier package, so all the specialty restaurants were included. We absolutely loved doing this package on the Sun. We ate at a different specialty restaurant each night. The Matkoto meal is a pre-fixed sushi extravaganza. 8 courses. My husband doesn’t love sushi as much as I do, but we both had a lot of fun at this meal. There was a lot of food. Arrive hungry!

I started my meal off with the Kodai No Hana. It was fun to try, but I wouldn’t get it again. It was one of the premier cocktails.

Our meal started off with Miso soup and edamame arriving at the same time. I really enjoyed their miso soup.

Miso Soup

I love charred edamame. Theirs was very good.

Chu-toro temaki - this was not our favorite, but I am glad we tried it. The second picture is how they suggested we eat it. I will say we loved the pickles. My husband doesn’t usually eat Tuna, so I was surprised he even tried it but he did.

I was pretty full by the time the sushi selection arrived and totally forgot to take a picture! Sorry! I did capture one of the snow crab which I barely had room for! I love snow crab so I made room!

Our dessert was Mochi. I am not a fan but that is ok because I was extremely full by this point of the meal.

Is Makoto Ocean Worth It?

In my opinion — yes, especially if you enjoy sushi or upscale Japanese cuisine.

Here’s why:

  • The fish quality is noticeably higher than the buffet or MDR sushi

  • The hot dishes feel restaurant‑quality, not cruise‑ship‑mass‑produced

  • The ambiance is calm and modern

  • Service is attentive without being stuffy

If you’re sailing on the Sun Princess, Makoto Ocean is one of the most consistently praised specialty restaurants onboard.
